Young giraffe saved following recovery from catastrophic septic arthritis

Placental matrix has shown to aid in the regeneration of bone as well as the healing of blood vessels and skin. In January 2020 Adam Biedrzycki, BVSc., Ph.D., an assistant professor of equine surgery at the University of Florida, was asked to assist in the treatment of a 2-year-old reticulated Giraffe named JoJo. JoJo had severe septic arthritis in the medial claw of her right front foot, causing her to be lame. JoJo’s septic arthritis continued to worsen despite the various treatments carried out, including analgesics, antibiotics, stall rest, and a custom-made boot. Radiographs showed bone abnormalities and deterioration causing lesions and fluid drainage. The final attempt to save JoJo’s foot was done by using a mixture of bone allografts, antibiotic beads, and Placental Matrix. Over the period of six weeks, the infection cleared, bone regeneration was underway, and her gait had returned to normal.
